No One Actually Enjoys Vaping - Here's Why You Think You Do
The mango hit, the throat buzz, the five-second calm. It feels like pleasure. But neuroscience, public health data, and the people trying desperately to quit tell a very different story.
That satisfying exhale. The little cloud. The momentary softening of whatever tension had been building in your chest. If you vape, you know the feeling - and you'd probably call it enjoyment. But what if that feeling isn't enjoyment at all? What if it's just the temporary absence of a discomfort that vaping itself created?
This isn't a moral argument. It's a neurochemical one - and it's one of the most important misconceptions in modern public health.
The Nicotine Trap. Relief Disguised as Reward
The core illusion of vaping is deceptively simple. Nicotine, the primary active ingredient in the vast majority of e-cigarettes, activates the brain's mesolimbic dopamine system - the same reward circuitry involved in responses to food, social connection, and survival-related behaviours. When nicotine binds to receptors in the ventral tegmental area (VTA), it triggers a rapid burst of dopamine release into the nucleus accumbens, the brain's reward hub. That surge feels good. In the beginning, it genuinely is a novel chemical reward.
But the brain adapts. Fast.
With repeated exposure, the brain undergoes what neuroscientists call receptor upregulation - it grows more nicotinic acetylcholine receptors to cope with the constant stimulation. Simultaneously, your baseline dopamine sensitivity drops. The result is a brain that now requires nicotine just to reach what used to be its normal resting state. Without it, you slip into what researchers describe as a hypodopaminergic state - low motivation, irritability, anxiety, difficulty concentrating, and a gnawing sense that something is missing.
Then you vape. And all of that lifts. Not because the vape gave you something extra - but because it temporarily restored what it had previously taken away.
As the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) puts it plainly - nicotine might make you feel better in the short term, but that's because it stops the discomfort of withdrawal - not because it's helping with stress or anxiety.
Or as Queensland Health's quit-smoking guidance notes, "The relief you feel when you have a cigarette or vape is not actually a relief from stress. Instead, it's a relief from the nicotine withdrawal symptoms you're experiencing."
This is the trap. Nicotine creates the problem, then sells you the solution.
What the Science Shows. Your Brain on Nicotine
The neuroscience is unambiguous. Research published in the journal Pharmacological Reviews has detailed how nicotine acts on the same dopaminergic pathways as other major addictive substances. The drug increases firing rates in midbrain dopamine neurons, flooding the nucleus accumbens with dopamine - the same mechanism seen with cocaine, amphetamines, and opioids (Pharmacological Reviews, 2022).
A landmark NIH-published review in the Annual Review of Neuroscience found that nicotine capitalises on the brain's natural reward-learning circuitry. Dopamine neurons in the VTA normally fire in response to unexpected rewards, helping the brain learn which behaviours are worth repeating. Nicotine hijacks this system, training the brain to treat vaping as a survival-level priority (PMC, Dani & De Biasi).
Meanwhile, a 2023 review in Current Opinion in Neurobiology confirmed that while dopamine is central to nicotine's rewarding effects, the addiction story is even more complex. GABA and glutamate signalling in the mesolimbic system also contribute to reward-related behaviours, and the habenula-interpeduncular pathway plays a key role in driving withdrawal and aversion (ScienceDirect, 2023).
What all of this means in practical terms - the "buzz" you feel from your vape is your brain temporarily resolving a deficit that it wouldn't have if you'd never started vaping in the first place.
The ASH Data. What Vapers Actually Say About Why They Vape
If vaping were genuinely enjoyable - if it delivered sustained pleasure independent of addiction - you'd expect people to cite enjoyment as their primary reason for doing it. They mostly don't.
According to Action on Smoking and Health (ASH)'s 2025 Smokefree GB survey of over 13,000 adults, the top reasons people give for vaping are functional, not hedonic - helping to quit smoking (19%) and preventing relapse (14%). Among never-smokers who vape - the group most likely to be vaping for "fun" - stress relief (35%) topped enjoyment (31%). Even that enjoyment figure demands scrutiny, because as we've established, what nicotine users experience as enjoyment is neurochemically indistinguishable from withdrawal relief.
The ASH data also reveals something telling - when asked for open-ended responses, one of the most common answers among vapers was simply "because I am addicted to vapes." Not because it's pleasant. Not because it enhances their life. Because they can't stop.
Currently, around 5.5 million adults in Great Britain vape. Of those, 55% are ex-smokers and 40% still smoke - meaning the overwhelming majority are managing a pre-existing nicotine dependency, not choosing vaping as a leisure activity. Only around 5% of current vapers have never smoked.
The Withdrawal You Don't Notice
One of the most insidious features of nicotine addiction is how quickly withdrawal sets in - and how invisible it becomes.
According to the Cleveland Clinic, nicotine withdrawal symptoms begin within four to 24 hours of your last dose. They include irritability, anxiety, difficulty concentrating, depressed mood, and insomnia. They peak around days two to three and can persist for weeks.
But here's the crucial point - most vapers never experience full withdrawal, because they vape constantly. What they experience instead are micro-withdrawals - small dips in nicotine levels between hits that register as restlessness, distraction, or a vague sense of unease. Each puff resolves this dip, creating the illusion of a mood boost or stress relief.
A clinical trial published in Nicotine & Tobacco Research (Hughes et al., 2019) found that e-cigarette abstinence produced all the standard DSM-5 tobacco withdrawal symptoms - anger, anxiety, difficulty concentrating, depression, hunger, insomnia, and restlessness - along with additional symptoms like anhedonia (inability to feel pleasure), impulsivity, and mood swings. The withdrawal followed the classic inverted-U time pattern seen with all addictive substances.
In other words, the "normal" state of a regular vaper already includes low-grade withdrawal between hits. What feels like enjoyment is actually the resolution of that withdrawal. Remove the vaping entirely, and after a few uncomfortable weeks, the baseline returns - and with it, the ability to feel calm, focused, and content without any chemical intervention at all.
The Flavour Illusion
But what about the taste? Surely the watermelon-ice or crème-brûlée flavour is genuine pleasure?
Flavour preference is real, but it functions more as an enabler of addiction than a source of independent enjoyment. ASH's data shows that fruit flavours now dominate the UK market, rising from 22% of preferences in 2016 to 51% in 2025. Tobacco flavours, by contrast, have fallen from 33% to just 11%. The flavours make the nicotine delivery system more palatable - especially for young people and never-smokers - but nobody is buying a £7 disposable vape purely for the taste of synthetic mango.
Research from Johns Hopkins University has identified thousands of chemical ingredients in vape products, many unidentified, and some linked to respiratory irritation and potential toxicity (Johns Hopkins Medicine). The flavour experience, pleasant as it may seem, is a delivery mechanism - the wrapping paper, not the gift.
Youth and the Developing Brain
The picture is particularly concerning for young people. Yale neuroscientist Marina Picciotto, who has studied the basic science of nicotine addiction for decades, notes that adolescents are more sensitive to nicotine's rewarding effects because their brains are still developing. The brain doesn't fully mature until around age 25, and nicotine exposure during this window can impair the neural pruning process that shapes attention, impulse control, and decision-making.
A study published in Tobacco Control found that over half of young regular e-cigarette users perceived themselves as at least somewhat addicted, with daily users and those vaping for more than a year far more likely to report addiction (Camara-Medeiros et al., 2021).
The ASH evidence brief on nicotine, published in November 2025, is clear - the primary risk from nicotine use is addiction, and depending on how quickly nicotine is delivered, it can rapidly cause dependence (ASH Evidence Brief). Modern vape devices, particularly pod systems with nicotine salts, can deliver nicotine to the brain with startling speed - in some cases faster than a traditional cigarette.
What Happens When People Quit
Perhaps the most revealing evidence comes from the other side. People who successfully quit nicotine - whether from cigarettes or vapes - consistently report improved mood, lower anxiety, and reduced stress over the long term. As Queensland Health's guidance notes, those who've successfully quit "report an improvement in their mood long-term and experience lower levels of depression, anxiety, and stress compared to those who continue to smoke."
This is the final nail in the "vaping is enjoyable" argument. If vaping were a genuine source of pleasure - like music, or exercise, or good food - quitting it would make your life less enjoyable. Instead, quitting makes life more enjoyable. The anxiety lifts. The mood stabilises. The constant, nagging need for the next hit disappears. What's left is a baseline state of calm that nicotine had been quietly eroding all along.
A Note on Harm Reduction
None of this is to say that vaping is the same as smoking. The evidence is clear that for existing smokers, switching to vaping represents a significant reduction in harm. A Cochrane systematic review found high-certainty evidence that nicotine-containing vapes increase long-term quit rates compared to traditional nicotine replacement therapy. The Royal College of Physicians has stated that nicotine itself confers relatively little risk to health compared to smoked tobacco. And ASH estimates that approximately 2.4 million adults in Britain quit smoking with a vape in the last five years.
Vaping as a stepping stone away from cigarettes is a legitimate public health tool. But vaping as a lifestyle choice - as something you do because you "enjoy" it - deserves honest scrutiny. What you're enjoying is the resolution of a dependency cycle that vaping itself created.
The Bottom Line
The next time you reach for your vape and feel that familiar wave of relief, ask yourself. What exactly am I relieved of?
If you never vaped, you wouldn't feel the tension that the vape resolves. You wouldn't need the dopamine hit, because your dopamine system would be functioning normally. You wouldn't feel stressed without it, because the stress it "relieves" is withdrawal it caused.
Vaping doesn't add pleasure to your life. It creates a deficit, then charges you - financially, physiologically, and psychologically - for the privilege of temporarily filling it back in.
That's not enjoyment. That's addiction wearing a very convincing disguise.
