Are nicotine free vapes safe?
A nicotine free vape is the same device, the same heated liquid and the same cloud with 0mg on the label. Sometimes the label is even telling the truth. Here is what you are buying, whether it helps you stop, and why you cannot buy the disposable ones any more.
Around 6,000 people a month in the UK search for nicotine free vapes, and most of them are asking the same question in different words. Is this a way out. It is a fair question and the vape shops answering it are, to put it gently, not neutral. Neither are we. We make a thing that competes with nicotine free vapes, so we have every reason to slag them off. We are going to try not to, and tell you what they are good at, because they are good at one thing.
What a nicotine free vape actually is
Exactly what it sounds like. A vape, usually a refillable pod kit these days, with e-liquid that contains propylene glycol, vegetable glycerine and flavourings, and no nicotine. The liquid is heated by a coil into an aerosol you inhale. Everything about the experience is the same as the nicotine version, the draw, the throat feel, the cloud, the ritual of charging the thing every night.
There are three flavours of "nicotine free" on the shelf.
- 0mg pods and prefilled kits. Same brands, same devices, zero strength option.
- Shortfills. Big bottles of 0mg liquid sold with a gap at the top so you can add a nicotine shot. The clue is in the design.
- Nicotine free disposables. These were the entry point for a lot of people and they are gone. Since 1 June 2025 it has been illegal to sell any single-use vape in the UK. The ban is on the format, not the nicotine, so a 0mg disposable is banned exactly the same as a 20mg one. If a shop is still selling you one, that is a Trading Standards matter, not a loophole.
Are nicotine free vapes safe?
Safer than a nicotine vape in the sense that there is no nicotine in it, which is not nothing. Nicotine is the addictive bit and the bit that does the blood pressure and heart rate things.
Not safe in the sense that you are still inhaling heated propylene glycol, glycerine and flavourings that were designed to be eaten, not breathed. The long-term data on that is younger than most of the people doing it. Nobody has 20 years of numbers on flavoured aerosol in lungs, and the honest position of every public health body is "less bad than smoking, not good".
And then there is the label problem. In 2025, Trading Standards in Devon, Somerset, Torbay and Plymouth tested 76 vapes sold as nicotine free. More than one in eight contained nicotine. One of them had 27mg per ml, which is about what a pack of 20 delivers. Ten of the 76 also broke the tank size rules. So if you buy a nicotine free vape from a corner shop with a hand-written price tag, there is a decent chance you are still on nicotine and have no idea.
If you are going to do it, buy from a proper shop, look for the TPD compliance, and understand that "0mg" is a claim, not a guarantee.
Do nicotine free vapes help you quit?
Here is where we have to be careful, because this is where our bias lives.
For getting off the nicotine, sometimes, as a bridge. Some people step down from 20mg to 10 to 5 to zero and it works for them. The evidence for it is thin because almost nobody has studied it properly, but it is not nothing.
For getting off vaping, no. That is the trap. A nicotine free vape keeps the whole routine intact. Same hand, same draw, same cloud, same pocket. Your brain does not care about the label. It learned "reach, draw, exhale, relief" over a few thousand repetitions and a 0mg pod runs that loop perfectly. The habit does not fade because nothing about the habit changed. And a nicotine refill is one shop away, which is the relapse route for most people who try it.
That is the one thing nicotine free vapes are good at and bad at, at the same time. They scratch the itch completely. Which means the itch never goes.
What most people are actually looking for
If you are searching for nicotine free vapes, the odds are you have already decided you do not want the nicotine and you are looking for something to do with your hands and your mouth in the meantime. That is a real need. It is arguably the main reason quits fail after week three, when the withdrawal has gone quiet and the reaching has not.
You have two ways to meet it.
Keep vaping without the nicotine. Cheap to start, fully familiar, keeps you in the vape shop and one bad Friday from a refill.
Something that gives you the draw without the vape. This is the category we are in, alongside Ripple, Füm and Capnos, and we have rated the whole field honestly here. A device you draw on with resistance and flavour, no liquid, no heat, no aerosol, nothing to charge. NOQA One is ours. It is £49.99 for the kit, refills come to 67p to £1.11 a day, and it will not feel like a vape, because it isn't one. Nothing hits. That is the point and, for about a third of people, it is also the deal-breaker, so we would rather you knew now.
We are not going to tell you ours is better for everyone. If you need a full throat hit to get through the first fortnight, a 0mg vape from a reputable shop will do that and ours will not. If you are past the first fortnight and your hands are still reaching, the thing that does not look, feel or work like a vape is the one that lets the habit actually fade.
A reasonable plan
Week one to three, deal with the nicotine. Nicotine replacement from the NHS, free, thirty years of evidence, or a 0mg vape if you must, from a shop you trust.
Week three onwards, deal with the reach. Get the vape out of your pocket entirely and put something in your hand that is not one. Flavoured air, gum, a lozenge, a pen you click, honestly anything that completes the loop without heated liquid in it.
Then stop needing the second thing too. That is the actual finish line, and nobody on this page, us included, gets you there. You do. We just make the in-between less sh*t.
Frequently asked questions
Are nicotine free vapes legal in the UK? Yes, as reusable pod kits and shortfills. Single-use disposables have been banned since 1 June 2025 whether they contain nicotine or not.
What is the best nicotine free vape? The one from a shop that can show you its TPD compliance. Brand matters less than knowing what is in the liquid, given that Trading Standards found nicotine in one in eight products labelled 0mg.
Do nicotine free vapes have side effects? You can still get a dry mouth, a cough and throat irritation from the propylene glycol and glycerine. Nobody has long-term data on flavoured aerosol in lungs yet.
Can your lungs recover after years of vaping? Partly, and faster than you would think. Cough and airway irritation usually ease within weeks of stopping. Nobody has 20-year data on vaping, so nobody can promise a full reset, but every lung study says the same thing, the day you stop is the day the repair starts.
Does the NHS recommend vaping to stop smoking? For smokers, yes, as a less harmful swap. For people who have never smoked or who want off nicotine altogether, no. The NHS stop smoking services now help vapers quit vaping too, free, and the NHS Quit Smoking app covers it.
Is a nicotine free vape the same as a flavoured air device? No. A nicotine free vape heats liquid into an aerosol you inhale. A flavoured air device like NOQA One, Ripple or Füm gives you a draw and a flavour with nothing heated and no aerosol.
